Kai is our resident bonehead. Kai finished at 15 months in limited showing with 4 majors. In his first shows of his 2006 campaign Kai was Best of Breed at the GSMDCA Western and Southwestern Regional's in Palm Springs on January 6th and 7th. Kai was being expertly handled By Michael Brantley. competing as a special through the middle of February Kai gained enough breed points to maintain a number 1 ranking for the first quarter of 2006. We have pulled Kai from specials competition because we found that we couldn't live without him.
Structure:
Kai is a Big, Tight, Balanced and Athletic dog. Unlike
most of the larger GSMDs that are way overdone and in fact are incapable of
doing the work that they were supposedly bred for. Kai actually could pull
a 300 to 500 pound cart full of farm products 5 to 10 kilometers to market
and back without dying half a K down the road. He has a rock solid topline
and a stunning rear. His front assembly is gorgeous. At 4 years old he is
fit at 135 pounds. He has been describes by several Swissy breeders as "the
most balanced Swissy they have ever seen".
Kai is well marked and does have a slight white tip. He has excellent color
with bright pure white and dark black. His red trends from a deep vivid red
on his face to a lighter red on his rear. Kai has a relatively short coat
with black undercoat on his body and gray undercoat on his neck that just
barely shows in the winter months.
Movement:
Kai has wonderful movement. He is one of the very rare Swissys that has a dead straight down and back. His side gait is exceptional with very strong drive and as he is conditioned reach continues to improve.
Temperament:
Kai has a correct GSMD temperament. He will alarm bark when strangers come to the house but he will accept their presence when we show that it is acceptable. He will approach strangers once they have been accepted by us. He is fascinated by children. Outside of his territory He is somewhat reserved with strangers but will not bark or posture when approached. At shows and at breed education events he accepts the significant attention he receives without objection. Within the family he is very soft and playful. He is a very sensitive dog.
Kai is dominant with other dominant intact males. However he is a reactor not an initiator. He will not go looking to get into it with other males but if he feels challenged he will respond appropriately. Kai has significantly mellowed with age and has become much more tolerant of dominant behaviors from other males. Within the family Kai is accepted as and accepts his role as the alpha male. He is very playful with the other dogs all of which are females. He does not guard food, objects or favored spaces.
Health
Kai is from a litter of nine. To date 4 have been OFA'd with 1 excellent, 1 good (Kai), 1 fair and 1 mild (shallow acetabulums no DJD) all 4 have normal elbows. three have been CERF certified. As noted on his CERF certification Kai has mild disticiasis with "one hair in each upper eyelid". There is currently no epilepsy in Kai's litter. Kai is out of two OFA excellents with normal elbows both CERF'ed.
